Why do they keep going out?

Hi All,

Did a big bbq a few weeks ago using my new Weber bbq, started it off by using their chimney to light the charcoals...all good so far!

However after about two loads of burgers and sausages the charcoals pretty much went out with all the fat from the food....

Now the Weber site recommends using the direct method but I think the indirect method may be better?

Has anyone tried this method for burgers?

Dave

Welcome Dave!

That's weird, never had that problem before. Do you have the bottom vents open (and the top)?

Yep, both are open...

I think the burgers I have been buying have been especially fatty....

Interesting.. I've cooked bacon directly on the grill over the coals and had some awesome flare ups but nothing putting the coals out. Maybe it was a fluke? Maybe the coals weren't completely lit and only the "hot" parts got smothered?

Is it possible that the ashes from the burned coals is smothering the other glowing coals? You might wanne look at the grid that holds the coals. Is it high enough? Do you empty the bottom of your BBQ after you're done barbecuing? Or maybe put something not burnable under the grid so the ashes can fall down a little more to keep it from smothering your the other coals.

Thanks guys,

I'm using a Weber kettle bbq, all the vents were open (i think unless someone has been playing around with the bottom vent?)

Ill leave the coals in the chimney a bit longer next time....
